The communications authority of Malaysia, MCMC is enforcing that communication devices must be certified and launching a campaign to check labels.
The use of uncertified devices in Malaysia is common, as consumers are able to purchase devices from anywhere in the world via e-commerce. Consumers must be aware that communications devices used in Malaysia are required to be certified by SIRIM, according to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA) and the Communications and Multimedia (Technical Standards) Regulations 2000.
Compared to 2016, the number of cases of frequency interference tripled in 2017 and almost tripled again in 2018.
Although a device may have an FCC or CE label, this does not permit the device to be used in Malaysia. This is because the same frequencies that a device operates at in the country its certified for may be allocated for a different use in Malaysia, such as cellular services. Usage of uncertified devices degrade the quality of these services and affects other consumers. In severe instances, safety, security, and emergency services can be impacted.
Check Your Label Campaign
Through this, MCMC advises the public to only purchase and operate communications devices bearing the MCMC label. This label indicates that the device is certified by SIRIM, according to the Malaysia defined standards.
