Class Licenses Proposed for Wireless Home Area Networks in Addition to Type Approval

The Communications Regulatory Authority of the State of Qatar proposes class licenses for Wireless Home Area Networks (WHAN) in addition to type approval.

To accomodate for the current trends globally in the development of IoT technologies for smart home systems, the CRA is proposing a Class License for Wireless Home Area Networks (WHAN). This is intended to facilitate smart home automation systems, including residential electrical appliances, wireless sensors and alert systems, and lighting automation technology.

Grant of License

The CRA grants the Class License for Wireless Home Area Networks to anyone who possesses, uses, operates, and installs WHANs without the Licensee needing to apply for the License.

Licensees are authorized to import and operate WHANs within the State of Qatar and use the frequency bands assigned.

The License provides the minimum technical and regulatory requirements and operating specifications of WHAN(s) across different types of applications.

Type Approval

Prior to being manufactured, imported, sold, marketed or distributed in the State of Qatar, WHAN(s) are required to be Type Approved in accordance with the Type Approval Policy for Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment and the Type Approval Guidelines for Radio Equipment and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment.

WHAN(s) may be imported or used without seeking Type Approval if WHAN(s) are for private use only, and provided that WHAN(s) comply with the standards adopted by CRA.

Technical Requirements

Technical requirements for WHANs cover applications such as SRD, ISM, and UWB.
