Certification Procedures for External Power Supplies and Chargers for Computers

The Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles (SEC) of Chile establishes certification procedures for external power supplies for computers and tablet chargers using switch mode units.

Please note that the deadline for receiving comments on this proposal has been extended to September 27th, 2019.

Analysis and testing of external power supplies for computers (laptops and desktops) and tablet chargers that use switched sources will follow the IEC 60950-1 standard.

Prior to certification, components must be identified and verified to remain the same as used in the manufacturing of the type of equipment.

If there is any change in components, additional testing must be carried out to verify that the product continues to conform to the originally certified type.

The number of samples required will depend on how many models are seeking certification, following this pattern:

  • Up to 5 models seeking certification β†’ testing performed on 1 representative model
  • Up to 10 models seeking certification β†’ testing performed on 2 different representative models
  • Up to 20 models seeking certification β†’ testing performed on 3 different representative models
  • Up to 30 models seeking certification β†’ testing performed on 4 different representative models

The following information and field descriptions will be verified:

  • Identifier: Alpha-numeric name that uniquely identifies the components in each product
  • Component: Type of component, for example, resistor, inductor, fuse, etc.
  • Brand: Component brand.
  • Model: Component model.
  • Technical Characteristics: Main characteristics of the component.
  • Certification Mark: Type of certification.

Technical requirements will follow IEC 60950-1:2005-12 + Corrigendum 1 2006-08, Information technology equipment - Safety - Part 1: General requirements.

The original deadline for comments was August 15th, but has been postponed to September 27th.
