Updates to Technical Standard and Specifications for Plugs and Sockets

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) revised IS 1293:2019 for plugs and socket outlets of rated voltage up to 250 volts and rated current up 16 amperes.

IS 1293:2019 pertains to plugs and fixed or portable socket-outlets for AC only, with and without grounding contact, with a rated voltage above 50 V but not exceeding 250 V and with a rated current not exceeding 16 Amperes, intended for household and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors.

The revised standard is effective and current as of November 8, 2019.

Below are some key updates in the newly revised standard:

  • Withdrawal of 10A current ratings
  • Phasing out of plugs and socket outlets of 16.5 mm pitch for 2.5 A socket design

After July 25, 2020, only IS 1293:2019 certificates for all the plugs which will be specified in BIS test reports.

The transition to the updated standard and last date for the implementation of IS 1293:2019 is July 25, 2020.

After July 25, 2020 the old Standard IS 1293:2005 will have been officially withdrawn, and no registration can be granted as per the withdrawn version of the standard.
