Hong Kong Asks Citizens to Move Away from 2G

The Office of the Communication Authority (OFCA) has asked citizens to move away from 2G and to use upgraded services.

This comes after the fixed 15 year agreement with Hutchison Telephone Company Limited (Hutchison) was not renewed and will cease use on the 30th of September 2021. Thus OFCA is reducing the use of 2G to allow for an expansion of 5G in Hong Kong.

The 1800MHz band, which is where 2G is most commonly in use, is going to be reallocated once 2G is completely phased out. Mobile Network Operators will be asked to cease operation, but depending on market considerations. This may change as a result.

Current users of 2G are asked to move to contact their current provider on how this would affect them, and are advised to upgrade their service plans and mobile hardware.
