6GHz Coming to the Mainstream

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has opened applications to be a 6GHz AFC operator in the United States.

The 6GHz band is meant to be an addition to the current 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands which are primarily used for home internet and communication. In these bands, both bluetooth and WiFi exist.

The initial 6GHz report and order authorized two different types of unlicensed operations—standard-power and indoor low-power operations. The devices that use 6GHz will have an automated frequency coordination (AFC) system to prevent harmful interference to microwave links that operate in the band.

This period of application will be open until November 30, 2021, with the subsequent public commenting period closing on the 21st of December 2021. Applications for AFCs past the November 30th date will be considered on a rolling basis.
