A New Common Standard for Charging

The European Commission (EU) has released a new proposal regarding the use of a common charger for all mobile devices.

The new proposed change to Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU will now include the following items.

  1. Standardize the charging port: USB-C
  2. Standardize the charging speed
  3. Require that manufacturers disclose information about charging specifications and speed on the product or packaging
  4. Require that manufacturers must offer option for the consumer to obtain device without the charger (unbundled option)
  5. Add EC powers to amend the details as needed in the future (including to cover wireless charging options, for example)

The commenting period is open from September 23rd, 2021 and closes on November 18th, 2021. These comments will be considered by the European Parliament.
