3G Services Cessation in Singapore

In a recent development, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has officially announced the cessation of 3G services in Singapore, with the cutoff date set for July 31, 2024. This decision is part of the ongoing efforts to upgrade and enhance telecommunications infrastructure in the country.

To ensure a smooth transition and compliance with the upcoming changes, all equipment dealers are urged to take note of the following key timelines:

1. Registration and Renewals Stoppage (From November 1, 2023):

  • The IMDA has ceased accepting new registrations and renewals for 3G-only mobile phones and non-VoLTE capable smartphones.
  • 2. Sales Prohibition (From February 1, 2024):

  • Local sales of 3G-only mobile phones and non-VoLTE capable smartphones will be prohibited. IMDA will invalidate the registrations of these devices by February 1, 2024.
  • 3. Cessation of 3G Networks and Services (From July 31, 2024 Onwards):

  • 3G networks and services will be officially discontinued in Singapore from July 31, 2024.
  • To assist customers during this transition, equipment dealers are strongly advised to:

    a. Inform Customers about 3G Services Cessation:

  • Clearly communicate to customers that 3G services will cease on July 31, 2024, especially when selling 3G-only mobile terminals and non-VoLTE capable smartphones.
  • b. Ensure VoLTE Capability for 4G/5G Devices:

  • For customers purchasing 4G or 5G mobile phones/smartphones, ensure that Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is enabled. Assist customers in enabling VoLTE on their new devices and encourage them to make a test call to verify VoLTE functionality.
  • c. Ensure Emergency Call Functionality:

  • With the cessation of 3G networks, emphasize the importance of ensuring that mobile phones sold can make emergency calls while connected to local operators' networks.
  • These measures aim to facilitate a seamless transition for both equipment dealers and customers as Singapore prepares for the next phase in telecommunications technology. Stay informed and help spread awareness to ensure a successful migration to advanced mobile services.
