EU Draft Decision to Harmonise 116–260 GHz Spectrum for Advanced Radiodetermination Applications

The European Commission has published a draft Commission Implementing Decision proposing the harmonised designation and availability of radio spectrum in the 116–260 GHz frequency range across EU Member States. The initiative aims to support next-generation radar and sensing technologies while reducing regulatory fragmentation within the European market.

Under the draft framework, Member States would make this spectrum available on a non-interference and non-protected basis, subject to common technical conditions defined in an annex to the Decision. The proposal is technically grounded in CEPT Report 86, ensuring consistency with existing spectrum usage while enabling innovation in sub-terahertz applications.

The harmonisation covers the following radiodetermination application categories:

Once adopted, this Decision will enable manufacturers to place compliant products on the EU market under a harmonised regulatory framework, without the need for individual spectrum licences, provided all technical conditions are met.
