GCC Technical Regulation for AM/FM/T-DAB+ Radio Receivers – UAE & Member States

The United Arab Emirates, together with the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, has circulated a WTO notification proposing the β€œGCC Technical Regulation for Terrestrial Radio Receiver Specifications for AM/FM/T-DAB+”. This draft regulatory specification outlines harmonised technical requirements for radio receivers that receive terrestrially transmitted AM, FM, and T-DAB+ broadcasts across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

Scope of the Regulation

The regulation applies to all producers, manufacturers, importers, and retailers wishing to sell radio receivers or any product with a built-in radio receiver in the GCC countries. Covered equipment includes home receivers, portable receivers, and vehicle receivers, as well as devices that combine radio reception with other functions.

Key Technical Focus

Regional Harmonisation and Market Impact

This GCC technical regulation is based on existing frameworks such as those previously adopted in the UAE (e.g., UAE.S 5021:2018) and extended to the wider Gulf region. The harmonised specification provides clarity for manufacturers targeting multiple GCC markets by aligning receiver requirements under a common standard.

Note: This draft is currently circulated at the request of GCC delegations under WTO TBT procedures. Final implementation dates and enforcement mechanisms will be determined following local regulatory processes.
