Thailand NBTC Advances New Frequency Framework for Wireless Microphones and DECT Technology

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand approved draft announcements aimed at modernizing the use of radio frequencies and technical standards for wireless microphones, including the introduction of Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) technology.

These updates are designed to support the increasing demand for reliable, high-capacity wireless audio systems at large-scale events such as concerts, conferences, and live broadcasts, where spectrum efficiency and multi-channel operation are critical.

Current Frequency Use and Market Challenges

Wireless microphones in Thailand are currently authorized to operate in the following frequency bands:

With rising usage across education, media production, entertainment, and public events, these bands have become increasingly congested. In parallel, reliance on legacy technologies has highlighted the need for updated standards and expanded spectrum options.

Key Elements of the Draft Amendments

Move Toward Unlicensed Spectrum Access

In line with its broader spectrum policy, NBTC is exploring the allocation of unlicensed frequency bands for wireless microphones. This approach would reduce administrative burdens for users and mirrors the regulator’s earlier success in opening 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi applications.
