DoT Release Lower 6 GHz Rules for LPI and VLP WAS/RLAN In India

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a notification on January 20, 2026, introducing the Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System, including Radio Local Area Network in the Lower 6 GHz Band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2026. These rules apply to the 5925–6425 MHz frequency band and are now in force.

Under the new regulations, Low Power Indoor (LPI) devices may operate with a maximum equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) of 1 W, while Very Low Power (VLP) devices intended for outdoor use are limited to a maximum EIRP of 25 mW. The framework allows wireless access systems to operate without individual licensing, provided they comply with the specified technical requirements.

The initiative is intended to promote broader adoption of wireless technologies in both indoor and outdoor environments while ensuring effective spectrum management and minimizing interference with existing services. Manufacturers, service providers, and network operators should ensure their equipment meets the new technical standards in order to qualify for the licensing exemption.

Overall, the rules bring India in line with global developments in the use of the lower 6 GHz band for low-power wireless connectivity, helping expand access to high-speed, low-latency communication services nationwide.
