Canada Finalizes Fixed Service Standards for 21.2–23.6 GHz Band via SRSP-321.2 Issue 1

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has formally transitioned its fixed backhaul compliance framework by publishing Standard Radio System Plan SRSP-321.2, Issue 1. Originally introduced for public consultation via the Radio Advisory Board of Canada (RABC), this official standard replaces the legacy SRSP-321.8 guidelines. It establishes the updated minimum technical and operational criteria for the efficient deployment of fixed, point-to-point line-of-sight radio systems across Canada.

The core update of SRSP-321.2 is the intentional expansion of spectrum coverage to encompass the full 21.2–23.6 GHz range. By integrating the previously restricted 21.2–21.8 GHz and 22.4–23.0 GHz sub-bands into a cohesive 23 GHz framework, ISED is answering industry demands for increased high-capacity mobile backhaul spectrum. This structural expansion enables domestic wireless network operators and internet service providers to harness an internationally aligned hardware ecosystem, optimizing supply chain flexibility and lowering deployment overhead.

To support significantly higher throughput and better data efficiency, the finalized standard introduces completely overhauled RF channel configurations. This includes the introduction of broader 60 MHz, 80 MHz, and 100 MHz channel bandwidths. Alongside these larger channel assignments, the text updates antenna radiation pattern envelopes (RPEs) to enforce stricter directional focus and mitigate cross-signal interference with adjacent satellite or terrestrial installations. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must align subsequent type-approval submissions with these newly validated parameters to secure compliance for the Canadian market.
