The Federal Communications Commission is proposing key updates to its rules governing the six-gigahertz wireless band in an effort to boost Wi-Fi performance inside buildings and extend high-speed connectivity to maritime vessels without causing interference to existing licensed services.
To address signal loss in physical structures, the commission plans to allow automated frequency coordination systems to apply a credit of up to six decibels for building entry loss when managing composite indoor access points. Because building walls naturally absorb and weaken radio frequencies as they pass outdoors, accounting for this signal reduction enables indoor routers to transmit at higher power levels. This results in stronger wall-to-wall coverage and improved data speeds for home and enterprise users while continuing to safeguard outdoor licensed microwave links operating on the same spectrum.
In addition, the agency is seeking to remove a restriction established in twenty-twenty that prohibited low-power indoor six-gigahertz devices from operating on maritime vessels. Opening this spectrum to cruise ships addresses the intense connectivity demands of thousands of passengers in high-density environments. The physical structure of these ships, which features thick steel hulls and heavy metal decking, naturally confines the wireless signals indoors and prevents unwanted signal leakage, ensuring that Earth exploration satellite services and terrestrial radio networks remain protected from harmful interference.
