Pakistan Opens 6 GHz Spectrum Band for Unlicensed Wi-Fi 6E Operations

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) officially designated the lower 6 GHz spectrum band, spanning 5925 MHz to 6425 MHz, for unlicensed Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) operations. By unlocking 500 MHz of additional spectrum, the regulatory decision enables the deployment of next-generation Wi-Fi 6E technology and establishes a framework for future Wi-Fi 7 applications across the nation. This regulatory milestone addresses growing network congestion in Pakistan by expanding indoor wireless capacity beyond the traditional 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) frequency bands.

Before this allocation, wireless local networks in Pakistan operated within heavily congested frequency ranges, which limited available channel bandwidth and subjected Wi-Fi networks to interference from everyday devices such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth accessories, and cordless phones. Opening the 5925–6425 MHz range provides wider, non-overlapping channels—including 80 MHz and 160 MHz configurations—enabling significantly higher data throughput, lower latency, and improved network stability. The PTA's regulatory decision aligns with its Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) framework, allowing unlicensed indoor RLAN operations without imposing additional spectrum licensing fees.

For hardware manufacturers and equipment importers, this regulatory update impacts device type approval procedures handled by the PTA. Manufacturers with existing radio certifications can now apply for certificate revisions to incorporate 6 GHz operational capabilities into previously approved models. Telecommunications vendors targeting the Pakistani market must ensure that Wi-Fi 6E devices comply with local technical requirements and power limits outlined by the PTA and the Frequency Allocation Board (FAB), ensuring all imported and locally distributed wireless equipment undergoes proper conformity assessment prior to commercial distribution.
