Mexico Streamlines Telecom Authorizations and Modernizes Regulatory Procedures

Mexico’s telecommunications framework has undergone structural administrative updates designed to streamline market access, reduce procedural friction, and modernize authorization workflows under the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law. Following public consultation initiatives launched by the Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) regarding simplified authorization rules, Mexican regulators have instituted administrative reforms aimed at expediting permit processing times, enhancing transparency, and clarifying compliance pathways for telecommunications operators, service providers, and equipment suppliers.

The administrative modernization drive focuses on digitizing submission channels, standardizing evaluation timelines, and simplifying authorization frameworks across short-range devices, satellite services, and public telecommunications networks. In parallel, technical regulations—such as Technical Provision IFT-016-2024 for low-power radio devices operating between 30 MHz and 3 GHz—continue to refine equipment testing parameters and laboratory accreditation standards. Additionally, regulators updated mandatory physical and electronic labeling guidelines, providing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and importers with extended transition periods to align device markings and digital compliance labels.

While broader legislative reforms transition regulatory oversight to the new Comisión de Regulación en Telecomunicaciones (CRT), existing IFT technical standards and homologation provisions remain fully operational. Manufacturers and suppliers placing radio frequency and telecommunications equipment on the Mexican market must continue securing mandatory type approval certificates through accredited local testing laboratories while updating administrative filings to account for digitized authorization procedures.
