Oman Establishes Harmonized Regulatory Framework for Ultra-Wideband Technology

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman completed a public consultation initiative on its proposed draft regulation governing Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. Seeking input from global industry organizations, testing entities, and equipment manufacturers, the regulatory body structured a modernized governance framework for low-power UWB applications. By establishing technical operational parameters across the mid-band radio spectrum, the authority aims to foster technological innovation, enhance spectrum efficiency, and support next-generation location tracking, short-range wireless communications, and radar sensing systems throughout the Sultanate.

The draft framework aligns Oman’s domestic technical requirements with established international benchmarks, explicitly referencing European standards such as the ETSI EN 302 065 series and European Communications Committee (ECC) spectrum decisions. Global industry stakeholders, including the UWB Alliance and IEEE 802 LMSC, formally endorsed the TRA’s regulatory direction, noting that adopting harmonized ETSI technical specifications and spectrum limits enables seamless co-existence with co-channel radio services while expanding UWB integration across consumer electronics, smart home ecosystems, automotive access systems, and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) platforms.

Following the consultation process, the TRA enacted updated regulatory measures, formally repealing outdated legacy frameworks such as Decision 88/2013 under Decision 1152/2/30/2025-10 to integrate UWB governance directly into Oman’s broader radio equipment compliance architecture. Manufacturers and importers planning to introduce UWB-enabled devices—including smartphones, asset trackers, and high-precision location systems—into Oman must ensure that equipment design meets harmonized ETSI output power and emission mask parameters, secures mandatory TRA type approval, and carries valid compliance markings prior to commercial distribution.
