South Koreaβs National Radio Research Agency (RRA) finalized amendments to the technical standards governing wireless equipment across specialized radio stations, satellite ground facilities, and business-use radio operations. The regulatory update explicitly establishes LTE Vehicle-to-Everything (LTE-V2X) as the single, exclusive communication technology standard for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) operating nationwide, formally phasing out the legacy Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE / IEEE 802.11p) standard. This decision resolves multi-year coexistence conflicts between overlapping vehicular communication protocols, establishing a unified technical architecture to support commercial cooperative intelligent transport infrastructure (C-ITS) and autonomous driving deployment.
Building upon this technical standardization, South Korean telecommunications authorities have transitioned toward expanding spectrum allocations to accommodate next-generation 5G-V2X deployments. While LTE-V2X currently operates within dedicated channels in the 5.855β5.875 GHz range, upcoming spectrum strategies aim to expand dedicated bandwidth to 40 MHz within the 5.9 GHz band. Manufacturers, automotive OEMs, and component suppliers developing connected vehicle hardware for the South Korean market must align device technical specifications exclusively with cellular V2X protocols, ensuring technical construction files and KC certification submissions adhere to current RRA radio frequency parameters.
