South Africa ICASA Reopens Licensing Round for Community Sound Broadcasting Services

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) officially reopened the application process for Community Sound Broadcasting Service licenses and associated Radio Frequency Spectrum licenses. Following pre-registration workshops designed to guide prospective applicants, ICASA published formal Invitations to Pre-Register (ITPR), initiating a new licensing round to allocate unassigned community radio frequencies across local municipalities.

This spectrum licensing initiative creates downstream market opportunities for broadcast equipment manufacturers, network suppliers, and commercial importers supplying hardware to the South African market. To support incoming community stations, transmission hardware, commercial radio transmitters, and studio audio link equipment must maintain strict compliance with ICASA’s technical regulations and obtain mandatory type approval prior to operational installation and network deployment.
