Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) officially updated its technical standard governing line-of-sight point-to-point systems in the fixed service with the publication of Standard Radio System Plan SRSP-306.4, Issue 7 (PNRH-306.4 in French). Applicable to commercial microwave links operating across the 6425–6930 MHz frequency range, the revised specification modernizes spectrum utilization parameters, antenna radiation patterns, and channelization frameworks.
A core change introduced in Issue 7 is the restructuring of the radio frequency (RF) channel arrangement to support wider bandwidth demands. The updated plan expands allowable channel configurations by integrating 60 MHz and 80 MHz channel bandwidths, enabling telecommunication operators and backhaul providers to achieve higher data throughput across fixed microwave links. Conversely, ISED removed legacy low-bandwidth channel allocations of 2.5 MHz or less to optimize overall spectrum efficiency. Additionally, the standard modifies antenna performance parameters—specifically updating Envelope B radiation pattern envelopes—and removes redundant requirements previously covered under the generalized SRSP-300-Gen framework.
The transition to SRSP-306.4 Issue 7 directly impacts spectrum licensing procedures, equipment compliance assessments, and network design criteria managed under Radio Standards Procedure RSP-113. While legacy point-to-point microwave systems licensed as standard under Issue 6 may remain operational without immediate modification, all new network deployments, system expansion applications, and hardware modifications submitted to ISED must comply with the revised Issue 7 requirements. Equipment manufacturers, fixed service operators, and compliance engineers must ensure antenna performance files, transmit power calculations, and channel plans reflect the updated parameters to secure regulatory approval across Canada.
