Regulations Expand to Include 6G Band

New Zealand Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) has made the 5925-6425 MHz frequency band available for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) under the Low Power Indoor (LPI) use and the Very Low Power (VLP) Indoor and Outdoor use regime through the Radiocommunications Regulations Notice 2022. This came into affect as of August 1, 2022.

Several crucial points have been added. First, is the clarification of frequency bands for the use of Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) and of Transmit Power Control (TPC). DFS and TPC can only be applied to frequency band of 5250-5350 MHz wishing the 5150-5350 MHz range. Additional frequency ranges for WLAN in the 5925-6425 MHz band. There are two accepted operating modes. For indoors use only 24 dBm e.i.r.p.. Indoor and outdoor use is allowed with 14 dBm e.i.r.p..

60GHz devices can currently operate in the frequency range 57-71 GHz with increased permitted power of 25 dBW e.i.r.p.. Previous requirements concerning “Indoor-Only Systems” have been also abolished. This new addition to the adopted regulations puts New Zealand in step with other countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, and Europe. The wider 6 GHz band that covers 5925-7125 MHz still remains in limbo in international discussions of the future.
